Preparing for a baby for the first time can be overwhelming.

You don’t know what to expect so you don’t know what you REALLY need.

Sure, there are many articles that can help you compile a list of newborn necessities, but what are some of the less common, “non-essential” baby products that may come in handy too?

I’m talking about the things that experienced moms will share and recommend to you – the stuff that you didn’t know you needed.

Being a low-key minimalist who is very conscious of my spending, I only get the stuff I ABSOLUTELY need.

That’s why, when my first child was born, I literally only bought the bare necessities.

But having gone through all of that, I felt that there were some items I wish I had bought that would have made life a little easier during the first few months.

These are the game-changing baby products that I bought the second time around, which I wish I had bought with my first baby.

Love To Dream Swaddles

This is a product that I got after a mom-friend from my daughter’s school mentioned that her baby slept for over 6 hours a few days after using it.

I bought it on a whim but immediately LOVED it the moment we tried it.

I mean, I thought I was happy to go through the whole swaddling struggle again with my second baby, but after trying these swaddles out, why hadn’t I jumped on the bandwagon sooner?

No wonder why other moms kept recommending it to me!

Why I LOVE it:

  • Rather than pinning your baby’s arms down (like the traditional swaddles), these swaddles allow your baby to sleep in a more natural arms up position. This also gives them access to their hands so they can self-soothe.
  • The snug fit of these swaddles makes your baby feel secure and helps calm their natural startle reflex as well.
  • Two-way zipper for easy dressing and nappy changing
  • Machine washable
  • Breathable fabric which may help reduce the risk of overheating
  • Certified by the International Hip Displaysia Institute as being ‘Hip Healthy’. Your baby’s hips and legs can flex and move naturally.
  • They come in a range of sizes, fabric weights, colors and they even have transitional versions for when your baby is ready to wean off swaddles.

Honestly, need I say more?

No more escaping arms and hello to a good night’s sleep!

Baby Monitor

We didn’t have a baby monitor with my first baby, but having to constantly go up and down the stairs to check on the baby, getting up at night and walking to another room to check on the baby and risking waking up the baby was too much!

I HAD to make sure that we got a baby monitor for our second baby.

There are many baby monitors around, so make sure you do your research to find one suitable for your needs and budget.

The one we ended up getting was this one.

I love how we can see our baby straight from our phone, it has very clear vision (even at night), there’s 2-way audio so we can reassure our baby without actually being there, it sends a phone notification when motion is detected! It’s super easy to use and set up as well!

Mist Humidifier

Having a humidifier can make a world of difference to the quality of sleep a baby gets, especially if they are sick.

It increases the moisture in the air to help relieve nasal congestion, dry cough, and itchiness due to dry skin.

Your baby will be able to breathe more easily and sleep soundly.

We’ve got this one and we LOVE it.

Breastmilk Catcher

If you are planning to breastfeed your baby, expect a lot of leaking.

While your baby nurses on one side of your breast, the other side also lets down.

If you don’t have a milk catcher like this one, the milk from the other side goes to waste into your breast pad!

I really wish I knew about this when I was nursing my first baby, because I honestly would have invented this myself due to all the milk I felt like I was wasting.

Also, this milk catcher is small enough for you to pop in your bag so you can discreetly manually express pump your breasts when you are not at home. This will help relieve discomfort from engorged breasts!

Owlet Smart Sock

This smart sock is a first-mom’s dream come true!

Being a naturally anxious and paranoid person, the first few months with my first child was HARD.

Every time she slept, I think I checked if she was still breathing every half hour. And at night, every noise she made would wake me up, prompting me to triple check up on her!

The risk of SIDS is very real and the thought of it TERRIFIED me.

Needless to say, I had MANY restless nights.

Then, when I was pregnant with my second, a good friend that was going through pregnancy as well asked me if I had the Owlet Smart Sock

I didn’t, obviously. I hadn’t even heard of it at that point!

After looking into it more, I was gobsmacked. What an ingenious little product!

If these were around when my first child was born, I would have NO hesitation in buying it.

I convinced my husband that we needed it for my second baby and let me tell you, the peace of mind and the good night’s sleep is worth every dollar!

No more constant hovering around the crib as the baby is sleeping!

White Noise Machine

Both my babies were very light sleepers.

Getting a white noise machine should’ve been a no-brainer from the get-go… but again, I thought it was ‘unnecessary’.

I used this one very frequently with my second baby.

It drowns out all the sounds so that the baby can sleep undisturbed.

When it’s switched on, my son also associated it with sleeping time. So bedtime was made so much easier with it!

Breastfeeding Pillow

I decided to purchase a breastfeeding pillow after my second baby was born because I experienced some pretty bad back pains after delivery.

I thought having it would help provide support. And that it did!

It made breastfeeding so much more comfortable for me and for my baby.

Thermometer

As much as we don’t want it to occur, babies are susceptible to getting sick. And sometimes, it occurs more frequently than we would like.

When babies and toddlers get sick, they need to be monitored more closely due to the fact that their bodies and immune system are still developing.

Therefore, owning a thermometer is a MUST-HAVE if you have a newborn so that you can measure when a fever needs more urgent attention.

Our trusty ear thermometer we had for years suddenly stopped working and we had to buy a new one. We opted for this forehead and ear thermometer this time round and oh my, it is much more user-friendly and accurate!

I love how it instantly gives a reading of my baby’s temperature which is perfect for fussy and irritated sick babies.

Since you can get a reading on the forehead, you can also use it while the baby is sleeping without having to disturb them!

Water-proof Cushioned Play Mat

Getting a cushioned play mat like this one is perfect for babies who are doing more tummy-time and starting to get more active.

It’s soft and cushiony so it is a safe place for your baby to tumble about.

I absolutely love the fact that it is waterproof as well. It is so easy to clean and is extremely durable so it can last for years!
